I am also a member of the USGS Hydroacoustics Workgroup. In this podcast we will discuss the mobile phone software for data collection with the SonTek RiverSurveyor ADCPs. This software will commonly be referred to as RS Live Mobile. This lesson will provide a brief introduction on use of the RS Live mobile software, and familiarity with the PC-based RiverSurveyor Live would be beneficial as many of the icons, graphs and settings are similar. This podcast will not include field procedures associated with using the software. </textformat></html><html><textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>In this podcast we will start by discussing some of the controls on the mobile device itself. We will then discuss connecting to the ADCP, configuring the unit for collection using the smart pages and then move into data collection. Lower right; A SonTek M9 ADCP. </textformat></html><html><textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>Now, let’s discuss how to use the Motorola Q, the mobile phone compatible with the RiverSurveyor Mobile software. The phone itself has shortcuts on the home page and in the Start menu that allow you to open programs. Programs that have been recently used will have a shortcut on the home page and programs can also be accessed from the start menu. Options displayed on the bottom left and right corner of the phone are selected using the soft keys under those options. The navigational arrows can be used to move through menus and the enter key is used to make selections. The end key will minimize applications, but not close them. The back button can be used to move back in a program and delete text in a field, while the shift key is used to access other characters and capital letters on the keypad. The function key allows keys to be used for multiple purposes, like numbers. To use the numbers on the keypad, press the Function key, then the key for the number you would like to select. To enter multiple numbers, press the Function key twice, which will lock the numerical input on. To select a button or menu item you can use the navigational arrows to scroll over the item and press enter, or you can select the number for the menu item you would like to select. [Photo Description]: A Motorola Q device. </textformat></html><html><textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>The mobile device communicates with the ADCP using Bluetooth, which is automatically enabled by the software when it is started. Therefore, you don't have to turn Bluetooth on each and every time you make a measurement, though you would have to turn Bluetooth off after a measurement, if you'd like. To enable the Bluetooth manually, open the Bluetooth Manager by selecting the Start menu from the Home page, selecting Bluetooth > Bluetooth Manager and Settings. Then, toggle the Bluetooth status to on. </textformat></html><html><textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>To open the RS Live Mobile software you can click the RiverSurveyor Live icon in the Start menu, or there may be a RiverSurveyor Live shortcut on the Home page. When the software is opened, it automatically enables Bluetooth and searches for any RiverSurveyor systems with Bluetooth communications as an option. Right; Screen capture of the RS Live mobile software searching for an ADCP. </textformat></html><html><textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>Any RiverSurveyor systems found by the software are displayed, including the type of instrument, an S5 or M9, and the serial number. To select an ADCP, you can either select it and hit enter, press the number associated with the unit, or select the unit and press the connect soft key. If the software only finds one device, it will automatically connect. This automatic connection is an application setting than can be enabled (to connect automatically) or disabled. Where this setting is changed will be shown later in the lesson. This could mean there is an issue with the unit, or the unit is simply out of range. If you get this message, check the cables, batteries, dummy plug and LED lights on the PCM and click search again. Be warned that pressing the end key at this point will close the program completely. [Photo Description]: Screen capture of the RS Live mobile search screen after not finding an ADCP.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>Once the software connects with a unit successfully, it opens the Smart page, where you can step through the configuration of the unit and perform pre-measurement tests before data collection. To select an item in this menu, highlight it using the arrow keys and press the enter button. All of the menu items here cannot fit onto one screen, so be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom before pressing the start soft button. You will notice that some of the menu items have icons next to them, either a red exclamation point or green check mark. These icons can be used to help track which items have been completed and which still need to be addressed. The Quit option here, used by selecting the soft key on the keypad, is the only place you can completely close and exit the software. From this menu option you can either use the time set in the phone or you can specify a time. Either way, ensure the time from the phone or your other method are correct before setting the ADCP clock. Be sure to select Set Time using Soft Key 2 as selecting the Done button will not set the clock. Select the Start option using the Soft Key, which will start the test. This is same test as the RS Live software, which tests the sensors, battery and communication. While there is an option to use the last system test, running a test for each measurement is recommended. After a passing result, simply select Done using the Soft Key. The information filled out in the fields shown here is carried over to future measurements as it remains in the system. Each field has the character limit displayed. From the menu on this page the site information can be named and saved to a file, or a file containing the information you would like to use can be opened, if stored on the mobile device. Right; Screen capture of a Site Information being named and saved.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>In the Measurement Method menu option you select the type of data you would like to collect as part of your measurement. Your selection here will not only help determine the warnings displayed on the Smart Page menu options, but also determine what kind of data is collected as part of the first transect. Since a moving bed test is required for every measurement, either LC and MB or SMBA and MB should be selected. For example, if LC and MB is selected the Smart Page menu will show warnings related to the loop moving bed test, like a compass calibration not being conducted, and will save the first transect collected as a loop, which can be processed in the Windows version of the RS Live software. After selecting start, conduct the compass calibration using recommended procedures. The compass calibration is saved to the storage card on the mobile device. The first is the transducer depth, followed by the salinity of the river, the magnetic declination, which is only required when using GPS, and others. The settings cover two pages, though the screening distance, GPS compass heading alignment and GPS antenna offsets should not typically be used. In the Windows software, these settings are all contained on one dialog. [Photo Description]: Left and Right; Screen capture of the System Settings menu options.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>In the track and depth reference page you set the track reference, depth reference, coordinate system and the SmartPulseHD options. Both the track reference and depth reference can be changed during processing. The coordinate system should remain at ENU for most discharge measurements and SmartPulse should remain enabled. Here, you can change system information, check the recorder on the ADCP, collect a loop or stationary test, change measurement, edge and extrapolation settings, view the discharge measurement summary, change the application settings and change the speed of sound correction. You will notice option 10 in the menu is application settings, which is were you can set the software to automatically connect. This application settings menu is also where you can change the units from Metric to English. This may be useful if you find the ADCP's memory is full, as you can download the files and format the recorder. This may also be useful if there were communication issues during the measurement, as the files on the ADCP are always complete. This will bring up a new Navigation view dialog. If you have selected the measurement method of LC and MB or SMBA and MB, pressing start will initiate the appropriate moving bed test. Otherwise, this will start a regular measurement transect. In the lower left corner of the Navigation view there is an option to select Start Edge using the Soft Key. Right; Screen capture of the Navigation view.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>After selecting Start Edge in the Navigation view a new dialog will open that allows you to select the starting edge, the edge shape or method and the distance to shore. The user flow is only an option if a user method is selected for the edge. After filling out the appropriate information, select OK using the Soft Key. [Photo Description]: Screen capture of the Start Edge dialog. </textformat></html><html><textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>In order to allow a good estimate of the edge discharge, we collect at least 10 valid samples on each edge. We know that at least two good depth cells are required. Be sure to monitor the number of cells and the icons at the top of the page to ensure there are two or more valid cells and that the unit is tracking. Once these valid samples have been collected, select Start Moving using the Soft Key. You can see the number of samples collected here, though this would include any invalid samples, so be sure to review the data as it's being collected. In this view, you first notice the “Step” has changed to In Transect. The software will remain in this view during data collection, until the ADCP is at the far edge location, when End Edge can be selected. In the Menu option there is an ability to change from this tabular view to graphs, and we will show some of those graphs next. As this ratio approaches 1, it indicates the boat speed and water speed are coming close to being the same. The colors will change to indicate a good ratio, which is green, or a ratio that may indicate the boat is moving too fast, which is red. This is a good overall view to see inconsistencies in velocity and depth distribution across the transect. If separation is noticed in the SNR plot, it is an indicator that air may be at the face of one or more of the transducers. To prevent this, try lowering the ADCP deeper into the water and re-measuring the ADCP draft. After the ADCP is steady at it's stopping position, press the End Edge button. [Photo Description]: Screen capture of the End Edge dialog.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>After filling out the edge information, the software switches to the edge profile view, where you ensure the ADCP is collecting valid samples and has collected at least 10, before selecting End Transect. After selecting End Transect, the software moves to the Measurement Summary. Be sure to document the aborted transect number, and reasoning for aborting that transect, in the field notes. To continue data collection, simply select Continue using the Soft Key. If you have completed the measurement, selecting Menu then Done will end the measurement and give you an opportunity to view the recorder files. Before ending a measurement, it is important to review the measurement duration here and to ensure only the transects you intend to use for your measurement are selected. Lower right; Screen capture of the view recorder file confirmation.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>One advantage of the RiverSurveyor ADCPs is that the software, either on the PC or the mobile device, can be disconnected from the ADCP during a measurement. Then, another device can connect to the ADCP and end the measurement as the data is being logged on the ADCP itself. To disconnect from the ADCP with the mobile device select Menu and Disconnect at any time during the transect. To end the transect, you must connect to the ADCP, and either a PC or mobile device can be connected to do this. One common situation where it is useful to disconnect with one device and reconnect with another is when the data collection device you are using is having power issues. Loop or SMBA files are imported using the moving bed icon in the main toolbar to allow processing using the appropriate software, either LC or SMBA. Prior to leaving the site, the data should always be processed on the laptop software to evaluate moving bed tests, extrapolation method and determine the final discharge.
