England Water Science Center. I am also a member of the USGS Hydroacoustics Workgroup. In this podcast we will discuss the Windows Mobile software used with a PDA for data collection with the TRDI StreamPro.
</textformat>

</slidetranscript><slidetranscript slideid="4Tz6Kk2nLs3.5XbzWXIhLdv" slidebank="false" type="slide" noteswf="presentation_content/notes/5XbzWXIhLdv.swf" notespng="mobile/notes/5XbzWXIhLdv.png">

<textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>After a brief introduction to the software itself, we will discuss some considerations that apply to Windows Mobile devices in general. We will then discuss how to collect data in the software and how that data is processed.

[Photo Description]: Bottom left; Screen capture of the Data Collection tab in the StreamPro software. Upper right; A StreamPro ADCP on a standard float is deployed from a clothesline setup.
</textformat>

</slidetranscript><slidetranscript slideid="4Tz6Kk2nLs3.5eQVQyfRjlJ" slidebank="false" type="slide" noteswf="presentation_content/notes/5eQVQyfRjlJ.swf" notespng="mobile/notes/5eQVQyfRjlJ.png">

<textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>The StreamPro software runs on the Windows Mobile platform, which is used on most PDAs. The software is commonly run on iPAQ and Socket Mobile devices.

The software is a real-time discharge data collection program. Much like the WinRiver II software, the raw ADCP data is sent to the PDA through Bluetooth and the software computes discharge on the fly, displaying the data in real-time. The data collected in the StreamPro software can be easily loaded into the WinRiver II software for processing and playback, which puts the data into the same format as other TRDI products.

For an additional cost, stationary or section by section software can be purchased for the PDA. Though this technique is not covered in this lesson, the manual mentioned at the end of this lesson provides more detail.

[Photo Description]: Screen capture of the start-up screen from the StreamPro software.</textformat>

</slidetranscript><slidetranscript slideid="4Tz6Kk2nLs3.6hqBI2ebePx" slidebank="false" type="slide" noteswf="presentation_content/notes/6hqBI2ebePx.swf" notespng="mobile/notes/6hqBI2ebePx.png">

<textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>Before opening the software and starting the data collection process, there are several tasks that should be completed. First, ensure the PDA has enough battery life to collect a measurement. Most PDAs display the remaining battery life on the Home page, shown here, or in the toolbar at the top of the screen. While on the Home page, also ensure the date and time on the PDA are correct.

Many PDAs leave the Bluetooth radio turned off to conserve battery life, so ensure Bluetooth is active or turned on. Then, you can use the Bluetooth manager to establish the connection with the StreamPro you intend to use.

[Photo Description]: Screen capture of the Home page in Windows Mobile.</textformat>

</slidetranscript><slidetranscript slideid="4Tz6Kk2nLs3.6idy7NMBcYI" slidebank="false" type="slide" noteswf="presentation_content/notes/6idy7NMBcYI.swf" notespng="mobile/notes/6idy7NMBcYI.png">

<textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>Now, let’s discuss how to create a new connection with a StreamPro. While the specifics for many of the operations we will discuss in this lesson may vary from PDA to PDA, the principles are the same and are usually very similar from one PDA to the next.

Before establishing the connection, ensure the device’s Bluetooth is turned on. Then, go to the device’s Bluetooth manager and add a new device. The PDA will then search for nearby devices, so be sure the StreamPro is turned on. Once the StreamPro is found, select it from the list of available devices.

At some point during the setup process, the PDA may ask for the passcode or pairing code for the StreamPro. Enter a single zero for the code.

The device will also ask what type of connection is available from the StreamPro. On some devices you might only select outgoing port, and some you might have to select serial port.

Regardless of the type of connection, do not use a secure connection, make sure that option is not checked as it can cause some problems with communication during data collection.

Once this connection is established, there is no need to re-create it each time you use the unit as the Bluetooth Manager will store a shortcut to the connection with that StreamPro. Also, if Bluetooth is enabled, the StreamPro software can be opened and will attempt to establish the connection automatically.

[Photo Description]: First; Screen capture of the Windows Mobile Home page. Second through Sixth; Screen captures of the Bluetooth Manager during the process of establishing a new Bluetooth connection.</textformat>

</slidetranscript><slidetranscript slideid="4Tz6Kk2nLs3.5lLAbKWMaHL" slidebank="false" type="slide" noteswf="presentation_content/notes/5lLAbKWMaHL.swf" notespng="mobile/notes/5lLAbKWMaHL.png">

<textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>Once you have established a connection with your StreamPro, you can open the software by navigating to the Start menu and selecting programs. The program might also be available right from the Start menu on the PDA. The program will open to a screen where you can select which method you would like to use. We will only cover moving boat methods in this lesson, available by selecting StreamPro, though Section-by-Section is also an option here, but remember it requires an additional purchase.

If you select StreamPro from the start-up page of the program and can’t connect to the unit, select Tools from the menu at the bottom of the software and select Re-Connect. This will allow you to re-connect to the StreamPro gracefully. This is sometimes necessary if you have taken a considerable amount of time to open the software after establishing the Bluetooth connection.

[Photo Description]: Left; Screen capture of the StreamPro start-up screen. Right; Screen capture of the StreamPro software during the process of reconnecting to a unit.</textformat>

</slidetranscript><slidetranscript slideid="4Tz6Kk2nLs3.6ju3qA8dweC" slidebank="false" type="slide" noteswf="presentation_content/notes/6ju3qA8dweC.swf" notespng="mobile/notes/6ju3qA8dweC.png">

<textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>Once the software has been opened the first step is to go to the Setup tab and configure the unit for data collection. First, ensure the software is set to the units you would like to see, either SI or English.

Then, select whether or not you would like to use the compass. If your StreamPro does not have a compass, this will be set to Ignore. If the unit does have a compass you can select Use or Ignore. One situation where using Ignore would be appropriate with a compass in the ADCP would be a case where a valid compass calibration can’t be obtained or there was significant magnetic interference at the site.

[Photo Description]: Left and Right; Screen captures of the Setup tab from the StreamPro software.</textformat>

</slidetranscript><slidetranscript slideid="4Tz6Kk2nLs3.5mBizhCQbTb" slidebank="false" type="slide" noteswf="presentation_content/notes/5mBizhCQbTb.swf" notespng="mobile/notes/5mBizhCQbTb.png">

<textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>Now, let’s discuss how the StreamPro is configured for data collection. First, a good practice is to reset the configuration to the factory defaults to ensure there are no previous configurations loaded into the ADCP. Then, select change settings from the configuration menu, which will bring up a new window.

This new window allows you to enter site specific conditions that are used to configure the StreamPro. First, the number of ensembles to use for edge data should remain at 10. These ensembles are averaged and used for estimation of the edge discharges. The magnetic variation is only necessary when using a GPS, which is not an option when collecting data with a PDA and the StreamPro. When using a GPS with a StreamPro, WinRiver II must be used for data collection.

The transducer depth for the StreamPro should be measured at the site and entered into the software here. The maximum stream depth and velocity are also entered here. Initially, take a guess based on prior knowledge of the site and observations of the river with the understanding that a probing or test transect can be conducted and these values changed, if needed.

At the bottom of the page are the fields for setting the number of bins and the size of those bins. These values should typically not be edited manually; the default box should remain checked.

[Photo Description]: Left; Screen capture of the Setup tab in the StreamPro software. Right; Screen capture of the Change Settings page in the StreamPro software.</textformat>

</slidetranscript><slidetranscript slideid="4Tz6Kk2nLs3.68D4S8q7LHd" slidebank="false" type="slide" noteswf="presentation_content/notes/68D4S8q7LHd.swf" notespng="mobile/notes/68D4S8q7LHd.png">

<textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>When configuring the StreamPro the default, general purpose water mode is water mode 12. This mode will be selected by the software a majority of the time as it will allow data collection in most conditions. If the river conditions entered in the software allow for use of water mode 13, the software will display a check box to allow the low noise mode to be selected. This low noise mode, or water mode 13, is limited to a maximum depth of around 3 ft and velocities of about 0.8 ft/s. If the river conditions entered into the software are not in this range, the low noise mode will not be an option.

As a default, the StreamPro will collect data to a depth of about 6.5 ft. With this default maximum range the StreamPro utilizes 20 depth cells with the size optimized based on the expected river depth. There is an upgraded range option with the StreamPro that allows the unit to profile to a depth of around 16 ft. With this extended range the StreamPro utilizes 30 depth cells and larger depth cells. When the long range option is enabled, the StreamPro software will configure the unit using 30 depth cells as a default, as seen on the configuration screen. If you attempt to configure the unit with 30 depth cells and larger bins without long range enabled, you will get the warning shown here. Note that the majority of StreamPros in the USGS do have the long range option enabled.

[Photo Description]: Left; Screen capture of the StreamPro configuration page. Right; Screen capture of the warning displayed when attempting to use long range settings without long range enabled.

</textformat>

</slidetranscript><slidetranscript slideid="4Tz6Kk2nLs3.6FQiEevsBg7" slidebank="false" type="slide" noteswf="presentation_content/notes/6FQiEevsBg7.swf" notespng="mobile/notes/6FQiEevsBg7.png">

<textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>After you have entered the river conditions and configured the StreamPro for data collection, the configuration must be saved. To do this, select Save As from the configuration file drop down on the Setup tab.

A new window will come up that will ask the name you would like to use for your configuration, and where that configuration should be saved. The filename should follow your office’s QA plan for naming of acoustic measurements. Ensure the configuration is saved to the SD card or other non-volatile storage on the device.

The data collected as part of the measurement will have the same filename prefix as the saved configuration file. If this step is skipped, all of the data files will be collected with the filename prefix set to “factory default” and will be stored in the default location.

[Photo Description]: First; Screen capture of the StreamPro Setup tab. Second; Screen capture of the screen for naming and saving the configuration file.</textformat>

</slidetranscript><slidetranscript slideid="4Tz6Kk2nLs3.6GVbtoLioZr" slidebank="false" type="slide" noteswf="presentation_content/notes/6GVbtoLioZr.swf" notespng="mobile/notes/6GVbtoLioZr.png">

<textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>The next step in preparing for a measurement is to perform the pre-measurement tests. On the Test tab there is an Instrument drop down that allows a self test to be performed on the unit.

This test confirms the StreamPro and PDA are communicating, but does not perform detailed diagnostics. These test results are stored in the xml files associated with individual transects collected after the self test was conducted.

[Photo Description]: First; Screen capture of the StreamPro Test tab. This will allow you to conduct a test or probing transect and establish your starting and stopping edge locations. This is an important step when using the StreamPro handheld software as this is the only place you can enable pinging without collecting data in a transect.

After selecting Start Pinging the display at the bottom of the screen will show velocity, depth and the number of good bins. Move the ADCP across the channel and watch this live data to confirm the depth and velocity conditions you entered into the configuration page. On the edges, ensure the StreamPro is collecting at least two good depth cells. Mark these starting and stopping points once established.

Going back to the Instrument drop down will allow you to stop testing pinging.

[Photo Description]: Screen capture of the Test tab while test pinging.
</textformat>

</slidetranscript><slidetranscript slideid="4Tz6Kk2nLs3.5cY4VaBdK6k" slidebank="false" type="slide" noteswf="presentation_content/notes/5cY4VaBdK6k.swf" notespng="mobile/notes/5cY4VaBdK6k.png">

<textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>If the depth and velocity conditions you entered into the configuration initially don’t line up with your observations during the test pinging, you can go back to the Setup tab and select Change Settings from the Configuration File drop down.

This will open the configuration page, where you can edit the depth and velocity settings you entered previously. They are also required when using GPS, but GPS is not an option when using the handheld. Compass calibrations are recommended for every measurement, when available, even if a loop moving bed test is not being conducted.

The Compass tab is the last tab in the software and will show an option for both a Simple and Advanced calibration. The Simple test is a flat test, the StreamPro is set in the water or on a flat surface at the measuring location and rotated. For the Advanced test, the StreamPro is not only rotated during the calibration, but also pitched and rolled. Typically, the Simple calibration is recommended, unless you are measuring in conditions with high pitch and roll.

After selecting the appropriate method, click the Start Calibration button at the bottom of the screen and begin rotating the unit. The blue bar on the plot at the bottom of the screen shows your current location and locations you have already collected will show a certain color, with darker green bars being an ideal result. After collecting a full rotation, the software will prompt you to continue collecting the verification samples by rotating the StreamPro again. A successful result is one with a calibration error of 1 degree or less. If continued tests result in errors greater than 1 degree, it may be necessary to perform a stationary moving bed test.

The StreamPro calibration results are stored on the PDA under the My Documents/Project Files directory.

[Photo Description]: Upper left; Screen capture of the Compass tab during a compass calibration. In the StreamPro software moving bed tests are collected as a regular transect by selecting the Transect Start button. It is not necessary to enter an edge distance for these tests. When the software prompts you to move, collect the loop test or leave the ADCP in place for the stationary test.

The Ship Track display is the best place to look for signs of moving bed on the handheld software. This ship track display does not graph water speed or direction so it can be difficult to determine what direction is upstream. Consistent movement in one direction on the Ship Track display indicates possible moving bed. Since there is a limited ability to process the files on the PDA, and the fact that LC and SMBA are built into WinRiver II, these moving bed files must be loaded to a PC for processing using WinRiver II before leaving the site.

[Photo Description]: Screen capture of the Data Collection tab.</textformat>

</slidetranscript><slidetranscript slideid="4Tz6Kk2nLs3.6fygRl41jhR" slidebank="false" type="slide" noteswf="presentation_content/notes/6fygRl41jhR.swf" notespng="mobile/notes/6fygRl41jhR.png">

<textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>When the StreamPro is stable at the starting point for the transect, select Transect Start in the Data Collection tab. This will bring up a page allowing you to select your starting edge and enter the distance to the bank.

Once the edge distance is entered and you select the OK button, the software will ask you to hold position to collect the 10 edge ensembles, and then prompt you to move across the channel.

[Photo Description]: Left; Screen capture of the Data Collection tab. This indicator provides three pieces of information. First, the height of the bar indicates the % of bins used for velocity measurement out of the total possible number of bins. In this screen capture, the bar is roughly half way down the total space, indicating about 50% of the possible total number of bins are being used. Depending on the configuration of the unit this would be out of either 20 or 30 total possible bins.

The color of the bar indicates the number of depth cells being collected. If the bar is all grey, there are no good depth cells. If the bar is red, there is one, yellow indicates there is two and green indicates there are three or more good cells.

If there are invalid depth cells, they will show up as black in the bar, as we can see in the screen capture at the bottom of the slide.

[Photo Description]: Right; Screen capture of the Data Collection tab during a transect. In this example, TEST is the filename prefix. Files are numbered, starting at 000 and incrementing each time data collection is started or stopped. In this example, the file number is 001. The ‘r’ designates the raw ADCP data, while the ‘w’ designates a configuration file.
