Pre-class Assignments for the Class Velocity Mapping and Bathymetry with ADCPs

This page provides information on assignments that must be completed before attending the class, Velocity Mapping and Bathymetry with ADCPs. The assignments include: downloading and installing software and documentation prior to the class, reading assignments, and subscribing to a mailing list and a forum. Please use these instructions to download and install software and documentation on your laptop and complete the pre-class assignments. The documentation is in the form of pdf files. You must have Adobe's Acrobat Reader installed on your machine if you want to use/read the documentation. If you do not have it, then download it from Adobe's Web site and install it on your laptop.

Pre-Class Reading Assignments

1. Please download and read the following articles which discuss and/or apply ADCPs in velocity mapping and bathymetry analyses.
   • Required: Velocity Mapping Toolbox (VMT): A processing and visualization suite for moving-vessel ADCP measurements (Journal Article)
   • Recommended: Secondary circulation cells in river channel confluences: measurement artefacts or coherent flow structures? (Journal Article)
   • Recommended: Procedural Documentation and Accuracy Assessment of Bathymetric Maps and Area/Capacity Tables for Small Reservoirs (SIR 2006-5208)
   • Recommended: Bed morphology, flow structure, and sediment transport at the outlet of Lake Huron and in the upper St. Clair River (Journal Article)
2. Become familiar with the USGS Hydroacoustics Web pages.
3. Visit Teledyne RD Instrument's (TRDI) Web pages. Request a logon from customer support so that you can go to the customer support area of the web pages. Become familiar with TRDI's Web site and the material available on it.

Acoustics Mailing List and Hydroacoustics Forum

1. Please subscribe to the USGS acoustics mailing list. Once you are subscribed, you will receive any email sent to the mailing list. If you want to send email to the list, you can then do so by sending mail to acoustics@simon.er.usgs.gov.

1. Download and install the programs from the links below. You may need to have your IT support staff do the install or install it yourself using a privileged account. *Non-USGS students may not be able to download the files from the links below. We do not have permission to widely distribute these programs. If the links below do not work, please obtain the software directly from the manufacturer.

2. Verify that the software above works while logged in with your standard user ID. Make sure each program above will start without errors. Contact the course instructor, Ryan Jackson, or Kevin Oberg (OSW) if you are not sure that the software is working properly.
3. If at all possible, work with someone in your office to verify that your computer can communicate with ADCPs using the WinRiver II software.
